Pink Alley – Downtown Vancouver

The Pink Alley in downtown Vancouver, also known as Alley-Oop, is located south of West Hastings between Seymour and Granville. What used to be a dreary and dirty alley way in central downtown Vancouver turned into a vibrant pink and yellow urban park thanks to the β€œMore Awesome Now” project, a collaboration between the DVBIA, the City of Vancouver’s VIVA Vancouver program, and HCMA Architecture + Design.

The road and walls of the alley have been splashed with colour, decorated with basketball hoops and amplified with art installations. The Pink Alley is now a place where people can play, mingle and explore their creativity. A perfect place to take pictures or film videos, the space is now more than just a service corridor for dumpsters and vehicles.

β€œWe set out to transform an under-utilized space into a vibrant public space-friendly, accessible, and a lively part of our downtown urban streetscape,” said Charles Gauthier, president and CEO of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA).

While the alley has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly public space, vehicle access is still allowed and pedestrians are expected to move to the side to allow the vehicles to drive through.

The pilot project's success has proved the importance of such artistic public spaces in the city and more of these revitalize projects are on the way including a few finished ones such as FIELD and Fun Alley.
