WOW Westminster aka The W – New Westminster

WOW Westminster, also known as "The W", is an art installation in New Westminster located on the Fraser River's edge within Westminster Pier Park. You may have seen the artwork on Instagram or while crossing the Fraser River by SkyTrain or via the Pattullo Bridge. Designed by the Brazilian artist José Resende, this 140-foot-long art installation has become an icon of the City and region for the citizens as well as a very popular photography location for creatives from all over. The piece built in 2015 is comprised of four forty-foot red shipping containers precariously cantilevered to form a “W”.

Marcello Dantas, the person credited for having chosen both the site and the artist, says, “Resende’s WOW WESTMINSTER is not only an interpretation of the economic activity of the Fraser River and the flow of goods through trains, ships and trucks: it’s also about capturing the energy and history of this transportation hub, the transformation of the City of New Westminster and its waterfront into a recreational arts and cultural playground. WOW WESTMINSTER will become a respite for citizens and an icon of the City and region for decades as viewers explore the riverside walk along Westminster Pier Park.”
